Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery

Old Berlin meets new Berlin at the East Side Gallery of the Berlin Wall situated near Berlin. The East Side Gallery, which stretches 1.3 kilometers, was founded after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Artists traveled from across the world to gather and transform the east side of the wall that was previously untouchable. The paintings of the East Side Gallery depict a time of change and expression that took place after the wall came down. It symbolizes the hope and euphoria of the country's people. Today, the gallery features more than 100 paintings set on a picture wall. Sadly, these paintings are drastically faded after almost 20 years of exposure. While several artists work towards the restoration of the wall, the gallery remains the world's largest open air gallery. Lasting restoration is sponsored solely by private donations. To date only a handful of the paintings have been restored to their natural beauty, the rest continue to fade away.
